Specific areas of focus are: developing leaders, promoting and educating others about agriculture, and influencing the political process.

WVFB Flora Turner Memorial Youth Speech Contest - 2023

COMPETITION DEADLINES
Please contact your county FB for the county contest deadline and competition time.

STATE DEADLINE: October 13, 2023

PURPOSE

  • To promote a stronger interest and clearer understanding of the many aspects of agriculture.
  • To provide opportunities for our youth to gain knowledge, appreciation, and understanding of agriculture, and help to promote its many values and virtues.


SPEECH TOPICS
There are three (4) topics. Each contestant can choose one of the following topics.
  1. What is solar farming? How will it impact the future of farmland and food production?
  2. What does imminent domain mean? How can that adversely affect farmers and their property?
  3. WV forest land and carbon sequestration – Identifying actions to maintain or enhance the role in mitigating climate change?
  4. Crossing the bridge from 4-H and FFA to Farm Bureau.


QUALIFICATIONS
  • Any student who is at least 14 years old and has not reached their 19th birthday by October 13, 2023.
  • Students must be a resident of the sponsoring county FB.
  • Membership in the FB is not a requirement.
  • Previous state 1st place winners are ineligible to participate.
  • Contestants may use notes if needed, but judges may deduct if contestant appears to be reading portions of their speech.
  • County 1st place winner will compete in the state competition held in November during the WVFB Annual Meeting. If the county 1st place winner cannot attend, then the 2nd or 3rd place winner may compete.

WVFB Women's Committee Photo Contest

Category 1: County Farm Bureau Activity
Category 2: Comical, Funny, Whimsical Ag Photograph
Category 3: Rural Scene

General Rules:

  1. Only 1 entry per person, per category.
  2. Entries can be sent to the WVFB State Office or brought to the annual meeting on Friday.
  3. All entries must be 5 x 7 inches and be mounted on a mat board. There must be approximately 1” on all sides of the photo. The photo must be glued on securely and information must be on the back of the matting board as indicated below in #7.
  4. Both color and black & white photographs are acceptable.
  5. The mat board can be any color.
  6. Photographs in frames will not be accepted.
  7. The photographer’s name, address and county must be on the back of the entry. Entries with name or other markings (names of businesses, advertising, or other script on the front of the mat or photo) will not be accepted.
  8. Photographs must be the work of the exhibitor and be submitted by amateur photographers.
  9. Entries will be on display during the WVFB Annual Meeting.
  10. Judging of photographs will be done by the delegation attending the annual meeting beginning on Saturday morning.
  11. Cash prizes will be awarded in all three categories; 1st - $50, 2nd - $30, and 3rd - $20. In case of tie votes, the Women’s Leadership Committee will chose, by “luck of the draw” only 1 winner in each category.
  12. All photos will become property of the WVFB until judging. For publicity purposes, prize winners’ photos need to remain with WVFB. You will not receive your check until after the meeting. If photographs which were chosen winners are not left on the display board for the WV Farm Bureau’s use, you will not be given a prize check.
  13. WVFB will have the right to use the photos and include them in publications and promotional material.
  14. Photographs must be taken by a Farm Bureau member in good standing. We will check the roster.

“Agriculture in West Virginia” Poster Contest Rules


  1. All students currently enrolled in the fourth grade are eligible to participate in the contest.
  2. The theme is “Agriculture in West Virginia”. Posters can include one or many different types of agriculture.
  3. Posters will be judged on the following criteria: Following the theme; Originality; Neatness; Creativity; Finished poster must be the work of the student. (Parent involvement is encouraged as long as the work is done by the student.); The following materials may be used: markers, crayons, paint, colored pencils and colored pens.; NO stencils, cut-outs, glue-ons, regular pencils or pens may be used; Poster must be titled with the theme, “Agriculture in West Virginia” (spelled correctly and not abbreviated). If title is misspelled, the poster will automatically be disqualified.
  4. Any publicity or display of posters must recognize the winners of the “Agriculture in West Virginia” poster contest sponsored by the West Virginia Farm Bureau Women’s Leadership Committee, and cannot be judged in any other contest.
  5. The poster size is 22” x 14” (this is ½ of a standard sheet of poster paper).
  6. The county may set their own deadline for their contest. To be considered for the state contest, all 1st place county winning posters must be submitted to the WVFB state office for judging no later than May 1st each year.
  7. Judges may be selected by your County Board of Directors or Women’s Leadership Committee. These judges should be familiar with art. Two or three judges may be used.
  8. Suggested prizes are $15.00 first place; $10.00 second place; and $5.00 third place. The County Farm Bureau is responsible for covering the cost of the prizes at the county level.
  9. The State Farm Bureau office will supply certificates as follows:
